What is the Drug Detox Process?

Detoxification is a crucial part of the addiction recovery process no matter the substance to which the individual is addicted. There are some drugs for which detox treatment may not always be necessary, though; for this reason, it’s important to have a basic understanding of drug detox treatment, including the drug detox process, why drug detox treatment is necessary, and the role that drug detox plays in the overall drug addiction recovery process.

When it comes to drugs, there are three main types: depressants (including opioids, opiates, alcohol, Benzodiazepine etc), stimulants including ( Cocaine, Crack Cocaine, Methamphetamine, etc) , and hallucinogens (Including, DMT, Ecstasy, Salvia, Acid, etc). There are certain substances with characteristics of more than one class of drug, but most drugs will exist primarily in one of the three categories. The detox process for a substance various to a degree based on the type of substance to which a person is addicted. For instance, benzodiazepines — a class of pharmaceutical depressants that are typically prescribed for conditions related to anxiety, epilepsy, and severe insomnia — are known to be extremely addictive because of the effects that the continued abuse of benzodiazepines over a prolonged period of time has on levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid in the brain. It’s incredibly dangerous for a person who’s addicted to benzodiazepines to cease intake of the drug abruptly, so a benzodiazepine detox will sometimes begin with the individual tapering off the benzodiazepines. By comparison, a person who has been addicted to a stimulant drug like cocaine or Adderall will sometimes be provided with small doses of benzodiazepines due to the symptoms that can emerge when a person who has abused stimulants over an extended period of time ceases the stimulant dosage.

Prior to beginning a Florida detox program, a person will usually meet with an intake coordinator who will help the individual develop a recovery plan. Regarding detox, part of the intake process entails assessing the severity of the patient’s addiction so as to develop a tentative schedule for detox treatment. It’s not always possible to predict exactly how long an individual will need to complete a drug detox since the process can vary considerably from one substance to the next, but most individuals will be able to complete drug detox treatment within one to two weeks.

Drug detox is almost always a form of inpatient treatment, which means the individual will temporarily reside within the drug detox facility until he or she has completed the detoxification and is ready to begin the treatment phase of recovery. Again, detoxification serves as a physical cleanse that can take up to two weeks, during which time the patient is encouraged to relax and focus on recovery. To ensure the patient’s safety and success in the drug detox program, he or she is monitored and provided with round-the-clock care. In addition to ensuring that the individual doesn’t experience intense and potentially life-threatening withdrawals, this supervision helps the patient remains as comfortable as possible.

When Do I Need Florida Drug Detox Center?

Although drug detox treatment is incredibly beneficial to everyone, not everyone who suffers from drug addiction needs a drug detox program. There are a number of factors to consider
when trying to determine whether a person needs drug detoxification treatment. One of those factors is the substance to which the individual is addicted. As mentioned previously, some drugs have such a strong effect on brain chemistry that abruptly ceasing intake of those substances after having used that substance daily for an extended period of time can cause life-threatening withdrawal symptoms. Similarly, when a person spends a very long time in active addiction — perhaps years or even decades — his or her body has developed an intense dependence on the substance, which likely makes a drug detox program necessary to help him or her severe the body’s attachment on the substance or substances.

There are other factors to consider, too, but one of the most important is a person’s recovery history. Individuals who have had previous attempts at recovery are strongly encouraged to pursue more intensive forms of treatment, including an initial period of detox treatment. The majority of people who don’t achieve lasting sobriety after completing addiction recovery programs are usually unsuccessful due to having received insufficient amount or intensity of treatment; since a drug detox program is the most intensive form of treatment for physical addiction, having previous failed attempts at recovery is sometimes seen as a strong indicator of an individual’s need for drug detox treatment.

What Role Does Florida Drug Detox Play in Recovery?

According to the holistic perspective of addiction recovery, an addict can only achieve lasting sobriety by addressing his or her physical, mental, and spiritual needs; however, these needs must be met in a very specific order. If a person were to simply cease use of drugs and enroll in an inpatient recovery program, he or she would be unlikely to succeed due to the physical symptoms of withdrawal that may occur. Rather than attempting to address physical, mental, and spiritual needs simultaneously, drug detox treatment in Florida affords individuals with an initial period of time during which to overcome the physical component of drug addiction. This ensures that when a patient begins the treatment phase of recovery, he or she can devote all of his or her energy and focus to those treatments rather than being distracted by physical symptoms.

DETOX PROGRAMS:

DRUG DETOX

What is the Drug Detox Process?

Detoxification is a crucial part of the addiction recovery process no matter the substance to which the individual is addicted. There are some drugs for which detox treatment may not always be necessary, though; for this reason, it’s important to have a basic understanding of drug detox treatment, including the drug detox process, why drug detox treatment is necessary, and the role that drug detox plays in the overall drug addiction recovery process.

We also have relationships with South Florida’s most reputable inpatient detoxification providers should that level of care be necessary. Collectively we are deeply experienced in administering detox treatment while alleviating more severe symptoms of withdrawal.

ALCOHOL DETOX

There are many misconceptions when it comes to addiction and recovery. Those who know very little about addiction have trouble comprehending why an addict isn’t able to simply stop using drugs or drinking alcohol. Although it is certainly possible for addicts and alcoholics to get sober, it’s not as simple as just giving up substance abuse. Addiction is a complicated and deadly brain disease, but it’s also quite unlike any other disease that exists. Some see addiction as a behavioral or moral issue, but the reason why addicts have such difficulties getting and staying sober is because the alcohol and drugs have changed the chemistry, structure, and functioning of their brains; without alcohol or drugs, these individuals experience physical, mental, and even spiritual discomfort.
