Choosing Healthy Media Influences in Recovery

In this day and age news media is at our fingertips 24 hours a day every day. This constant barrage of breaking news coverage, most of it negative in tone and content, can be a drain on us mentally and emotionally. While it is not a bad idea to keep yourself apprised of the news, you should maintain awareness of the content you are digesting on a daily basis and proactively choose some positive media sources in order to avoid reinforcing a negative attitude and worldview within yourself. Here are some ways you can seek out positive entertainment to boost your mood and attitude throughout the day.

First, it is never a bad idea to take a break from your phone and TV screen for a while with a good book. Reread a childhood favorite or explore today’s bestseller list and find a title which intrigues you. Try to avoid the salacious tell-all books being published today, and instead reach for an uplifting autobiography or some entertaining fiction. Losing yourself in a good book is a great way to exercise your mind while removing thoughts of all the tragedies occurring in the world today. You would also be patronizing your local library which could use the support offered by your enrollment.

As you return to the tablets and TVs, try not to go straight for the news apps or 24 hour news networks. The sensationalized headlines and endless commentary often lean in the general direction of doom and gloom, so they should not be your instinctive choice for entertainment. Instead, try searching YouTube for videos on topics or hobbies which you find interesting. With such a large community contributing to their vast library of videos, I am certain you will find other YouTubers who share you interests and post videos pertaining to them. This is a great way to increase your knowledge about topics that interest you while perhaps even making a connection to a like-minded individual through the comments section on these videos.

Today’s news media is dominated by pundits prophesying the end of the world as we know it. While they provide an important service to the general public, the overall tone of coverage these days tends to be negative and depressing. You should therefore limit your exposure to these sources of entertainment in order to preserve a more positive mindset, especially early in your recovery. There are ample sources of positivity both on and offline, it is simply a matter of choosing to seek it out. Make the healthy choice when it comes to your media consumption, your emotional and mental health will thank you for it!
