Eating disorders are a very serious class of mental illnesses defined by irregular and unhealthy eating habits. The most well-known eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating. All three have severe health consequences which can lead to death. Anorexia has the highest mortality rate out of all mental illnesses, with many of its victims either dying of complications due to starvation or taking their own lives due to their extreme dissatisfaction with themselves. Eating disorders are addictions all their own – the victim derives feelings of control through their extremely regimented eating habits. It is possible to recover from these eating disorders and return to healthy living.
Your eating disorder should be approached just like any other addiction, with all facets of the disease being addressed. At Evolutions Treatment Center, we have developed a holistic program of addiction treatment designed to confront your disease from all sides. First and foremost, you will work closely with a therapist in order to identify and work past the negative thought patterns contributing to your disease. Often there are traumatic events which occurred early on in your life which need to be processed. You should do your best to maintain full disclosure and honesty with your therapist so that all these issues may be appropriately dealt with in order to ensure your successful recovery.
Often eating disorders are accompanied by other mental illnesses such as depression. You should discuss any feelings of depression you are experiencing with your therapist and work with them to establish a medication regimen that works for you. Depression often contributes to the body dysphoria that is a major cause of your eating disorder, and the right medication can alleviate these symptoms so you regain a healthy sense of self. Let your therapist know if the medication prescribed is not working for you. You want to make sure you are on solid ground mentally before completing treatment lest you slip back into old thought patterns and put yourself at risk for relapse.
Eating disorders are serious addictions all their own, with a mortality rate highest among mental illnesses. The unhealthy eating habits associated with this class of mental illness have severe negative effects on the body, some of which will last a lifetime. It is important to seek treatment for these disorders as soon as possible in order to minimize the impacts they have on your health.
At Evolutions, our experienced and compassionate staff understand the disease you are struggling with and will work with you to correct your thought processes and get you on a path of healthy recovery from your eating disorder.
