Healthy Financial Habits to Form in Recovery

In our active addiction all our habits and activities revolve around acquiring and using our substance of choice. This can result in the formation of some very unhealthy behaviors which damage every facet of our health and well-being, including our finances. Now that you are living in sobriety, it is important to let go of these old behaviors and replace them with new, healthy ones. Here are some habits you should strive to form as part of your new, healthy recovery lifestyle.

The first step towards establishing healthy finances is understanding the flow of money to and from your accounts. This means taking the time to sit down and write out a budget, accounting for both your income and expenses each month. You should be as conservative and accurate as possible when formulating this budget, as an overestimation of your income or underestimation of your expenses will render the whole budget useless. Once you have calculated your net income you will have a better idea of what portion of your funds qualifies as disposable income.

Once you’ve completed a written budget, the real work begins - sticking to it! In our active addiction we lived well beyond our means, spending vast sums of money to fuel our substance abuse habit with no regard for the consequences of these actions. In sobriety, we must learn to live within our means so that we achieve self-sufficiency and can begin setting aside funds for our future. This will require some sacrifice on your part, as your income will likely not support the lavish lifestyle you grew accustomed to in active addiction.

Recovery is all about change as we set aside our unhealthy patterns of active addiction and instead opt for healthy, productive behaviors. Our financial health is one such area likely in need of some healing. Most addicts quickly deplete their financial resources while actively abusing substances and find themselves living paycheck to paycheck in the best of times. Having achieved sobriety, you should look to restore some sanity to your financial life and habits as well. This will provide you additional peace of mind as you achieve financial security and self-sufficiency. At Evolutions, we have incorporated lessons in financial health into our aftercare program as we understand the importance of this facet of our lives in sobriety.
