Healthy Habits to Cultivate in Recovery

Now that you are living a life of sobriety, you should try to develop some healthy habits and routines to replace the unhealthy ones of active addiction. Healthy habits help foster a sense of self-esteem and accomplishment while grounding you in the present and offering a form of stress relief. Stress reduction is crucial in early recovery, and having a few daily or weekly habitual behaviors can make all the difference when it comes to alleviating anxiety in your life. Here are a few ideas for some habits you can develop in your early sobriety.

A major component of 12-step recovery is a connection to a higher power. You can foster and strengthen a connection with your higher power through daily prayer or meditation, whichever works best for you. This is an easy habit to develop as both a start and end to your day. In the morning, meditation provides a serene start to the day while grounding you in the present. In the evening, prayer unburdens you from the worries of the day and clears your head for a restful night’s sleep. Five minutes of your time can make all the difference in your day, and the best thing about practicing prayer or meditation is that you can pause any time during your day and utilize it to relieve any stress you are experiencing, restoring mental clarity and your presence in the here and now.

Another simple habit you should consider forming is a daily connection to your sober supports. When we were in active addiction we retreated from the world, withdrawing into our homes and hiding what was really going on from those around us. This instinct for isolation needs to be obliterated now that you are in recovery, and the best way to do that is to counter it with the habit of daily communication. Taking time out of your day to reach out to others and share what is going on with you, as well as listening to what is going on with them, will help you keep a healthy perspective on your life while furthering your relationships with those supportive of you in your recovery. This is another habit which repays your small effort exponentially.

The formation of healthy habits is an excellent way to further insulate yourself from relapse and cement your foundation of recovery. In active addiction we are willing to go to the ends of the earth in order to continue our substance abuse. Now that you are in recovery, you should put forth the same amount of effort in furthering your sobriety. Healthy habits are an easy way to do this, requiring little effort on your part other than commitment. You should invest in yourself and your recovery by committing to a few daily habits which contribute to your mental, spiritual, and physical well-being. At Evolutions Treatment Center, we believe healthy habits are best formed in early recovery. We provide an environment and staff that encourage you to form and sustain healthy habits while undergoing treatment, so you are better equipped for your return to the world afterwards.
