How can I Keep my Recovery Fresh?

A common expression you hear in the rooms of 12-step recovery is the importance of “keeping it green”. This refers to keeping your recovery program feeling new and exciting, lest you become bored with the same old routine and start neglecting the work you should be doing on your sobriety. It can be difficult to reconcile the two goals of establishing a recovery routine while also keeping variety in your program. Here are a few tips which can help you achieve both these goals and secure yourself in your sobriety.

First, while you should always attend your homegroup meetings, there is plenty of room in your weekly meeting schedule for some variety. Try to give yourself one or two days a week for new meetings, and ask your homegroup members if they have any favorite meetings they would recommend you try. This is a great way to mix up your recovery routine and also exposes you to new potential sober supports.

Another way for you to incorporate variety into your recovery routine is by exploring H&I commitment options in your area. Hospitals & Institutions is an arm of AA and NA which brings outside meetings into treatment centers and psychiatric wards. You were likely exposed to H&I during your time in residential inpatient treatment yourself, and such a commitment is a great way for you to remind yourself of the reason you stay committed to your recovery. H&I commitments also expose you to those fresh in recovery who could use some help, either through sponsorship or simply a compassionate and understanding voice on the other end of the phone. H&I commitments are a great way for you to work on your own recovery program while carrying the message of recovery to those in need.

Recovery is a lifelong endeavor, requiring continuous self-examination and improvement on one’s behaviors and thought patterns. Unfortunately, it is common for those in recovery to stagnate after a year or so of sobriety, as the same old routine no longer carries the same level of excitement and interest it did early on in recovery. This is why it is so important for you to keep your recovery fresh and interesting, incorporating new meetings and experiences into your routine while maintaining consistency in your level of commitment to your sobriety. At Evolutions, we have developed an aftercare program for our clients which offers a wide variety of tools and activities to support you in your sobriety.
