Maintaining an Attitude of Gratitude

In our active addiction, we usually adopt a gloomy, pessimistic perspective on the world around us, refusing to believe anything good or worthwhile could happen to us. As we make the transition to sobriety, it is important to dramatically shift our perspective and attitude as we go about our daily lives in order to promote our recovery. Establishing and maintaining an attitude of gratitude is a great way to keep a healthy, positive outlook in your life, putting any challenges or obstacles you encounter in a context which illuminates them as opportunities for growth rather than threats to your stability.

No one said recovery was an easy lifestyle to live, and keeping an attitude of gratitude can be difficult when faced with disappointments and hardships. It is a common recommendation in the rooms of 12 step recovery for those new to sobriety to get in the habit of making a daily gratitude list. Usually five items long, this is a list of people, things, or ideas in your life for which you are grateful. Set aside some time either first thing in the morning or as you wind down in the evening to sit quietly and reflect on things in your life that give you a genuine feeling of gratitude. Some days it may take a few minutes to come up with five solid contenders, but so long as you stay sober you will always be blessed with at least five things a day for which you can feel grateful.

A grateful outlook on the world around you is especially important during times of strife, which occur in sobriety just as they did in your active addiction. A particularly difficult time at work, frayed relationships with loved ones, a car accident - these events at first glance seem to have no facet for which to be grateful, but there is usually a positive aspect to everything in our lives. It is simply a matter of putting forth the effort to find the silver lining of a situation. For example, you may be faced with many challenges at work, but you are blessed with employment in spite of the economic turmoil going on in the world. It is well worth your time and energy to actively seek the aspect of a challenge in your life for which you should be grateful, as this will shade the obstacle you are facing as surmountable rather than impossible.

You will frequently hear those in the rooms of 12 step recovery speak of the importance of an attitude of gratitude as an aid to sobriety. As you embark on your journey in recovery, you should be making a conscious effort to alter your beliefs and outlook on life in order to transition from negative thought patterns to positive ones. One way to encourage and reinforce positive thought patterns is to emphasize things in your life for which you are grateful. You should adopt the daily habit of writing out gratitude lists, as this simple task will go a long way towards calibrating your default mindset to that of thankfulness rather than that of disappointment or frustration. An attitude of gratitude will go a long way towards cementing you in your recovery, guiding you down the path your higher power has laid before you in sobriety for years to come.
