Managing Anxiety During Times of Protest

For those of you living in major metropolitan areas or even larger suburbs daily protests on your streets have become part of the new normal. These protests can easily add stress and anxiety to your life, both through complicating travel and as reminders of the unfortunate deaths of innocent men and women all over the country. Here are some actions you can take in order to mitigate the stress caused by these protests and the incidents which incited them.

Communication is such an important part of your sobriety, and it can be a useful tool to manage stress as well. Talking about your feelings of anxiety with a therapist, sponsor, or sober support is a great way to process these emotions and get through them. Bottling up stress inside only increases the pressure and eventually you will explode, either in anger or through negative behaviors such as relapse. Do not let your anxiety get to that point. Instead, open up to those around you about how you are feeling. You’ll be surprised how many people are going through the same emotions during this crisis.

Stress and anxiety often stem from feelings of helplessness or lack of control. Part of working a program of recovery is letting go of any sense of power or control we have over the events in our lives, but that does not mean we simply sit back and let our higher power take care of everything for us. There is a balance that is struck between positive action and the acknowledgment of our ultimate lack of power. Therefore, you should take some personal action to contribute to this cause in order to restore some sense of influence in your life. This could be anything from a donation to an organization involved in the issues at hand or even active participation in a peaceful protest should you feel comfortable doing so. Taking action will take you out of your head and give you a feeling of accomplishment to replace feelings of helplessness.

Part of recovering from substance abuse is the acceptance of the fact that so much of this world is beyond our control. This does not have to be a stressful or depressing fact – on the contrary, we should feel good about ourselves for any effort we put forth despite the outcome, and feel grateful to our higher power when the outcome is what we had hoped for. Despite the protesting occurring daily and the horrible events that have led to it, you can still manage and minimize your resulting stress through communicating and taking action, however small you may feel it is. At Evolutions Treatment Center, our therapists are committed to helping you manage your emotions in early sobriety and teaching you methods of coping with them in order to avoid relapsing.
