It is a sorry truth, but wars are a fact of life in today’s global society. Human rights violations, geopolitical friction and subversive economic interests all lead to conflicts across the globe, and where there is war there is trauma. For the brave men and women at the front lines of combat, often this trauma leads to the development of PTSD, anxiety disorders, depression, and substance abuse disorders. Thankfully, the medical community has come a long way in the treatment of these mental illnesses. Let’s examine a few of the most effective means of treating PTSD and other disorders stemming from trauma experienced by military veterans and active service members.
The preferred therapeutic method for the treatment of anxiety disorders, depression, and substance abuse disorders in veterans is, without question, cognitive behavioral therapy. This mode of treatment seeks to challenge and correct the disordered thought and behavior patterns which are negatively impacting the individual’s life. For those who have suffered trauma in the line of duty, such therapy may take time as these incongruous thoughts and beliefs stem from deep seated emotional and mental scars, which can take a great deal of time and effort to process and heal. So long as you remain committed to the process, cognitive behavioral therapy holds great potential to help you move past the mental illness which has developed as a result of your traumatic past.
For severe trauma cases and PTSD, the recommended course of treatment by the medical community is EMDR, or eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. This therapeutic process involves taking the patient back through the traumatic experience piece by piece while also focusing them on external stimuli, usually eye movements but auditory stimulation and other methods are occasionally used. This allows the patient to return to the traumatic event while remaining grounded in the present, enabling them to process the past trauma in order to heal. This is an especially useful treatment modality for active service members and veterans, as often the traumatic events experienced by these brave men and women are particularly grotesque and emotionally triggering. Again, so long as you remain committed to the process of EMDR therapy, this treatment offers those military veterans and service members struggling with PTSD a means to recover from this debilitating disorder.
For service members who have been through traumatic events during their time in the military, mental health disorders are often a tragic consequence of the brutality which visits upon those in the field of battle. Thanks to advancements in psychotherapy and modern medicine, no longer are such individuals fated to suffer under the yoke of mental illness as a result of their past traumas, as new therapies have been developed to help those struggling with PTSD and other disorders.
