Should I Plant Roots in Florida or Return Home after Treatment?

Evolutions caters to clients across the United States, so many of those enrolled in our inpatient treatment program have come from far and wide to receive addiction treatment services. As their time in residential treatment comes to an end, clients are faced with an important decision: should they return home upon successful completion or make a new start here in South Florida? There are several factors you should consider before making a decision that is best for your recovery.

On the one hand, returning home to family and friends who are supportive of your continued sobriety would provide an excellent net of security and accountability for you during the difficult early phase of recovery. The familiarity of home and loved ones can be a great comfort for a person, giving you confidence as you own up to your past mistakes and move forward in this new chapter of your life. The only caveat here is the potential tension between you and those loved ones due to your harmful actions in active addiction which had a negative impact on them. This could cause you undue daily stress and anxiety, putting you at greater risk for relapse. You should therefore approach the possibility of returning home with caution, as you do not want to put yourself in an uncomfortable situation so early on in recovery.

Alternatively, taking advantage of this opportunity to embark on this new chapter in your life free from past associations and environments could be just what the doctor ordered for your recovery. While you may be nervous to step into the world without your family and friends nearby, they will always be a phone call or FaceTime chat away. Besides, you have hopefully started to spread your wings in the recovery community here in South Florida, and it would be a shame to throw away these valuable connections to sober supports. There is a long-standing and thriving community of 12-step recovery here in South Florida as well, all of which makes a compelling argument for your settling down here to begin life anew in sobriety.

There is a common phrase which echoes in the rooms of 12-step recovery: when we get sober, the only thing that has to change is everything! In light of this fact along with the other benefits South Florida has to offer your recovery, you would be well-advised to consider planting roots here as you embark on this new chapter in your life. While the support of family and friends is valuable for your recovery and may be motivating you to return home, you can maintain your connection with these loved ones regardless of your physical distance from them. At Evolutions, we strongly recommend all our clients seek residency in a sober living facility here in South Florida upon completing residential treatment, and to this end we have developed a luxurious, structured sober living facility for those clients who wish to continue diligently working their recovery program. If you have recently completed treatment and are looking to remain in South Florida, call our Admissions Counselors today at 833-818-3031 and inquire about our sober living facility.
