“Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood him, praying only for knowledge of his will for us and the power to carry that out.” The eleventh step is another example of a “lifetime” step, and we are never truly done working it. There is always room for improvement and growth in our relationship with our higher power, and that growth is facilitated by our working an eleventh step each day in recovery.
Our connection to our higher power is what enables us to achieve and maintain our sobriety, as without spirituality we are alone and powerless against the disease of addiction. In light of the crucial role our higher power plays in our recovery, the eleventh step instructs us to nurture and expand our connection with our God. You should set aside time in your daily routine to practice connecting with your higher power, either through prayer or meditation whichever you find more beneficial.
This important step also highlights our continued commitment to allow God’s will to work through us, rather than rely on our own will which has only led us to pain and suffering. The focus of our conversations with our higher power should never be our wants or needs, as this is in direct opposition to maintaining faith that our God knows what is best for us and will manifest the ideal circumstances in our lives. Your prayers should be simple and consistent, communicating your gratitude for the things your higher power has blessed you with as well as reaffirming your desire to align your actions with God’s will for your life.
The eleventh step instructs us to set aside time in our schedules to foster and grow our connection with a God of our understanding. Spirituality is a crucial part of recovery, as we are powerless against the disease of addiction. Our salvation comes when we place our will and our life into the care of our higher power, and the eleventh step guides us towards a better understanding of our God’s will for our lives and how to best align our behavior with his will. As long as you make an effort to improve your relationship with your God each day, you will continue to grow in your recovery and receive the gifts sobriety has to offer!
