“Humbly asked him to remove our shortcomings.” The seventh step requires very little on our part. We’ve already acknowledged the fact that we are unable to manage our lives ourselves, and have decided to turn our will and our life over to the care of our higher power. The seventh step is simply a furtherance of this action. We are unable to rid ourselves of these character defects without assistance from our higher power, so we must have the humility to admit these faults to them and ask for their help to remove them from our lives.
By now you’ve hopefully come to realize the futility of complete self-reliance in the context of your recovery. Alcoholics and addicts are remarkably resourceful and highly competent individuals when it comes to many things in life, but we are equally incompetent and helpless when it comes to getting ourselves sober. This is why a relationship with a higher power is so important, and the seventh step highlights the significant role your higher power plays in your life and recovery. Without your higher power’s help, there is little hope for you to have these character defects removed from your daily life.
To successfully work a thorough seventh step you should pray to your higher power every morning asking for help with your shortcomings, and pray to them every evening thanking them for helping remove these barriers to your recovery. Incorporate these prayers into your daily communication with your higher power, and as they become instinctive you will find your character defects appear less and less in your life. The seventh step need not be overly complicated, you are simply leaning on your higher power for help and guidance in your quest for self-improvement and recovery.
The seventh step is one which we practice daily for the rest of our lives in recovery. Character defects are a natural part of the human condition, and they can develop well into our sobriety depending on circumstances we encounter. No one is perfect, and you are not expected to be completely devoid of flaws after completing the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. The seventh step offers us a way to plug in to the infinite power of a God of our understanding, letting them work in our lives and eliminate our character defects as we continue in our journey of recovery. So long as you humble yourself before your higher power and own up to your shortcomings, asking for their help to remove them from your life, you will be able to work a thorough seventh step each and every day!
