Steps to take After Treatment

For those struggling addicts who made the decision to enroll in a substance abuse treatment program, completion of treatment may have you feeling as though you’ve successfully beaten your addiction and can resume life as normal. This is a very dangerous mindset to have as a person in early sobriety. Recovery from addiction is a lifelong process of self-examination and improvement, treatment is just a catalyst enabling you to begin the journey that is sobriety. Here are a few suggested actions we at Evolutions recommend to all those exiting treatment.

12-Step recovery programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous have proven track records when it comes to helping people achieve and maintain long-term sobriety. You should absolutely look into 12-step meetings in your area, find several which you enjoy and whose attendees you feel comfortable with, and involve yourself in this community. At Evolutions, 12-step meetings are integrated into our treatment program as we host them on our campus and transport clients to outside meetings as well. 12-step meetings provide a routine, accountability, and a community of like-minded individuals who are a source of hope and wisdom for you as you begin your sobriety.

As you are attending these meetings, you should be on the lookout for a sponsor. A sponsor is your guide through the 12 steps of recovery, ideally someone with a year or more of continuous sobriety who has been through the 12 steps and has a relationship with a sponsor of their own. In addition to guiding you through the 12 steps of recovery, your sponsor is a close friend and confidant, someone with whom you can share anything going on in your life that you are struggling with. You should choose a sponsor whom you relate to and you are comfortable with, so there is no impediment to your communicating with them.

It is often heard in the meetings of AA and NA that getting sober is the easy part – the 12 steps are when the real work begins. As someone who just went through the trying ordeal of detox, you may feel some trepidation about getting involved in a program described as such. Listen closely towards the end of the meetings when they read the AA Promises. Ask members of your group if they are true, and if working the steps is worth it. Invariably you will get the same answer – Yes!
