Technology Addiction - Overhype or Real Danger?

Cell phones, laptops, iPads - in this day and age we are blessed with a myriad of personal tech devices which connect us to each other regardless of physical location and provide an endless source of information and entertainment at our fingertips. While these invaluable tools are incredibly beneficial to our daily lives, they do present a potential for addiction. Should this be a genuine concern for addicts in recovery, or is this another example of the media overblowing an issue for the sake of viewship?

For those with the disease of addiction, we have the unfortunate ability to take any seemingly healthy behavior and take it to an extreme at the expense of our overall health and well-being. In order to keep our addictive tendencies in check, constant vigilance is required if we want to continue to grow in our recovery. When it comes to technology, this means maintaining awareness of the amount of time we are spending in front of the various screens in our lives. You should utilize the screen time tracker apps available on most cell phones and tablets today, especially as we are still going through this period of recommended isolation amidst the pandemic.

If you find yourself already overindulging in the use of these devices, you should take steps to rid yourself of this unhealthy habit. Establishing set hours during which you are allowed to use your devices is a great first step, and if need be let those you live with know of your efforts so they can hold you accountable to these limits. Speaking for myself, I found that limiting my use of these devices while in bed getting ready to go to sleep served to cut down on my screen addiction as well as improve my sleep habits. For your specific situation, you should speak with your sponsor and/or therapist about the amount of time you are spending on your devices and whether or not you need to cut back.

As addicts living in recovery, we need to be mindful of our daily habits lest old behaviors resurface in our new sober lives. One such aspect of your life you should keep an eye on is the amount of time spent on phones, tablets, and in front of the television. As we find ourselves living under recommendations of isolation and work-from-home orders, it can be easy to get into the habit of spending most of your day in front of such devices. At Evolutioins, our treatment programs include both the learning and practice of techniques to avoid such pitfalls in sobriety, encouraging the formation and adherence to a routine centered around healthy balance in life. If you are in sobriety but feel you are struggling to establish such balance, call our Admissions Counselors today at 833-818-3031 and inquire about AfterCare programs available to you.
