Tips for Coping with Periods of Extreme Anxiety



In the trying times we find ourselves living in, those who have had issues with anxiety in the past are more commonly experiencing a return of symptoms and even bouts of extreme stress. A mental state dominated by severe anxiety is debilitating and often dramatically interfere’s with a person’s ability to function in their normal daily life. Given the prevalence of this extreme anxiety among the population at present, what can you do to cope with anxiety in your life and continue to function as best you can?


For those with an anxiety disorder, your instinctive responses as to how to minimize your anxiety are likely more harmful than helpful. These usually include isolating and avoiding people and situations for fear of being triggered. However, this avoidance of reality will only prolong your suffering, as you are not addressing or doing anything positive to cope with your baseline anxiety levels. Make it a point to leave the house at least once a day, if only to go for a walk around your neighborhood. This change of scenery and exercise will do wonders for your stress levels and peace of mind.


Another helpful action to take when you are experiencing a substantial amount of anxiety is to talk about your feelings with those close to you. Again, our instinctive response is usually the opposite, as we feel overwhelmed by even the simplest human interaction. You should fight the urge to isolate yourself and reach out to those close to you, especially sober supports if you struggle with a substance abuse disorder as well as an anxiety disorder. We are social creatures by nature, and talking things out with people you trust can go a long way towards alleviating a lot for the stress and anxiety you are experiencing.

It is important for those who suffer from heightened anxiety to take measures to mitigate and cope with any excess stress they are experiencing.
