Trauma and Substance Use Among Veterans

Due to the nature of having engaged in combat and being exposed to life threatening events, active duty military and veterans often experience alarming rates of both trauma related and substance use disorders. This unique population of heroic individuals tend to struggle more than the average American and deserve to get the proper care and treatment during their time of need.

At Evolutions Treatment Center we have developed specialized programs to treat complicated substance use disorders as well as co-occurring difficulties such as suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and drug and alcohol addiction simultaneously.

Substance Use Disorders are a significant problem among military veterans. According to the US National Library of Medicine/National Institute of Health (2017), for veteran women ages 18-25 drug use was found in 29% of the population. That number was even greater in the male population at 38%. For men ages 18-25 heavy episodic drinking, alcohol use disorder, and substance use disorder were more prevalent among veterans than civilians. Although the VA and other agencies have attempted to reduce substance abuse problems, the rate in veterans continue to rise. Alcohol and drug addictions often become progressively worse over time when left untreated.

High rates of PTSD have been found in veterans returning from nearly every war or combat situation in our nations history. According to the US Department of Veteran Affairs, PTSD afflicts approximately 31% of Vietnam veterans, as many as 10% of Golf War veterans, 11% of the veterans in the war in Afghanistan, and 20% of Iraqi war veterans. Returning from active duty and attempting to reacclimate into mainstream society can be both daunting and difficult. When attempting to do so after having endured traumatic experiences, the ability to acknowledge difficulties much less seek the proper treatment can feel insurmountable. However, symptoms will likely continue to worsen without proper assessment and treatment by licensed and experienced professionals.

Evolutions Treatment Center is proudly a Tricare provider for behavioral health services. As the healthcare program for uniformed and retired military service members and their families, Tricare offers coverage for a large range of substance use and mental health disorders. Evolutions has developed specialized programs to meet the needs of our military in both our inpatient and outpatient facilities.

Our substance use and trauma programs begin with in depth assessments by a multi-disciplinary team of psychiatrists, psychologists, licensed mental health professionals, nurses and other specialties in addiction and mental health. Upon establishing a clear diagnosis, we offer specialty tracks to treat trauma utilizing evidenced based approaches such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Rapid Resolution Therapy (RRT), Mindfulness training and other techniques. Our programs are facility by highly experienced, credentialed professionals including those with military backgrounds who can empathize with the specific needs and experiences of the military.

The difficulties impacting our military and veterans can be complicated and multifaceted. Co-occurring disorders of substance use and mental health difficulties can impact functioning in countless areas. The effects of trauma, alcohol and drug addiction can become pervasive, but are highly treatable with the appropriate level of intervention.
