MAT (Medically Assisted Treatment) programs are treatment programs combining the use of therapeutic medications with clinical therapy/behavioral therapy in order to treat all aspects of substance abuse. MAT Programs have seen a marked success rate among treatment centers as opposed to traditional therapy alone, and patients themselves are often more comfortable and confident in their sobriety with the addition of therapeutic medications. Here are two of the medications commonly utilized in reputable MAT Programs across the United States.
Suboxone (Buprenorphine) is a well-known and commonly used drug to combat opioid
dependence, and occasionally alcohol dependence. It works by operating on receptors in the brain to quell the cravings an addict experiences for the abused substance. It is often utilized as a detox medication for those suffering from opiate withdrawals, and studies have shown those who remain on a low dose of prescribed suboxone have a greater chance of maintaining sobriety than those who decline medically assisted treatment.
Naltrexone is another well-known medication used after an addict has successfully detoxed from opiates. It inhibits the euphoric effects of the drug, thereby removing the motivation for an addict to use in the first place. It has also been shown to curb cravings for opiates, and is an effective treatment for alcohol dependence as well, providing a similar blocking effect for the desired effects of alcohol. Naltrexone is available in pill form, taken daily, or as a once-monthly injection called Vivitrol.
Studies have shown Naltrexone has a positive effect on a recovering addict’s chance at maintaining sobriety.Medically-Assisted Treatment programs are gaining traction and popularity within the recovery community. At first looked up on with skepticism and suspicion, the results of these programs speak for themselves. Addicts looking to maximize their chances of maintaining long-term sobriety would be well-served by considering treatment centers which offer a MAT program for their clients.
