What Arrangements Should I make Before Entering Treatment?

Now that you have accepted you need help with your substance abuse problem and have located and chosen a treatment center to attend, you should be feeling relieved that your struggles with active addiction will soon be at an end. As you prepare to enter detox, hopefully to be followed by residential inpatient treatment, you will need to make arrangements so that you need not worry about any responsibilities of your life intruding on your mind as you begin working on your recovery. Here are some things you should remember to handle before entering detox so you are free to focus on your sobriety.

Depending on the extent of your losses during your active addiction, you could have few financial obligations or many to worry about. You should take steps to ensure these obligations are taken care of for at least sixty days from the date you plan to enter detox. As for your credit cards, debit cards, and checkbooks, you should either hand them over to a person whom you trust with such valuables or lock them up in a safe place. You can bring one of your cards with you to treatment so you are able to afford any incidentals which become necessary, but you should avoid bringing any more than this if you can. If you feel uneasy about having your cards out of your possession, many banks and financial institutions offer the ability to freeze your cards until they receive authorization from you unfreeze them. Take whatever steps will put your mind at ease, as it is important to avoid dwelling on outside stresses while undergoing treatment.

If you have managed to hold on to your job through your addiction, you need to let them know you are taking a leave of absence for at least sixty days, possibly longer depending on your progress in recovery. Many employers provide the ability for you to take a leave of absence under the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, so you need not worry about losing your job simply because you are entering treatment, nor do you have to disclose the specific circumstances surrouding your impending absence.

Entering treatment is a big step towards restoring your health and sanity through achieving sobriety. This is a substantial undertaking which should be afforded your complete attention and dedication. To this end, it is important to make necessary arrangements so that concerns of the outside world do not interfere with your working on your sobriety. At Evolutions, we strive to provide an environment fully insulated from the outside world and its anxieties so you may focus entirely on your recovery. Our Admissions Counselors are available to answer any questions you have and guide you through the process of entering treatment as painlessly as possible.
