What If I Feel I’m Cured and can Exit Treatment Early?

Your first experience in a substance abuse treatment center can be an emotionally and mentally exhausting process. Treatment requires you to face previously suppressed feelings and memories so that you can process them and deal with them in a healthy manner. For many addicts in treatment for the first time, after completing inpatient detox they are feeling “cured” and questioning why they need to stay and complete additional therapy. Even if you are feeling renewed and ready to take on the world having completed detox, it is important you trust the process and complete your prescribed course of inpatient residential therapy no matter how “cured” you think you are.

Recovery is a lifelong process, a journey with an ever-changing destination. Your feelings of elation now that you are free from the burden of physical dependence on substances are not a bad thing, but they can deceive you into believing you are cured of your addiction and are not an appropriate candidate for additional treatment. This could not be further from the truth! Separating yourself from your substance of choice is simply removing your unhealthy coping mechanism formed to deal with unresolved mental and emotional anguish. Unless you process this underlying trauma which led to your substance abuse disorder, you will fall right back into the same pit of despair from which you just began climbing out.

Substance Abuse Treatment is broken into distinct stages of care for a reason. It is necessary to first remove the influence of substances from your mind and body before proceeding to tackle the psychological aspects of addiction therapy. If we were to attempt to provide counseling and therapy while also medically assisting your detox, you would not be capable of actively participating in the treatment program and it would be ineffective. This is where trust and willingness come into play. You need to trust that the treatment program established by medical professionals has your best interests at heart, and remain willing to commit to actively participate in all aspects of the program without departing treatment against medical advice.

Making the decision to enter an inpatient substance abuse treatment program is often the most important choice you will make in your life. It would be a shame for you to waste the opportunity by allowing yourself to be deluded into thinking detox alone has “cured” you and departing treatment before completing your prescribed program. It is very possible you will emerge from detox, look around at the other clients in residential treatment, and say to yourself “I do not belong here, I’m not like them!” Try to remember this is your disease speaking to you, and not your rational mind. At Evolutions, our continuum of care has been refined over a number of years to provide the utmost care and beneficial therapy to our clients, maximizing their chances of recovery.
