Why do I Need SLAA Meetings as well as AA/NA Meetings?

Now that you have been in recovery for a few months, you have arrive at the point in your program where an in-depth self examination has taken place. As you have evaluated your life and your behaviors, it may become clear to you and your sponsor that you have developed a sex addiction in addition to your substance abuse disorder. You may believe that the rooms of AA or NA will be sufficient to treat all of your addictive behaviors, but it is adviseable for you to include some Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) meetings in your routine for several reasons.

The idea behind why AA and NA work is that only an alcoholic can understand the mind of another alcoholic. The same is true of opiate addicts, cocaine addicts, the list goes on and on. Each abused substance or behavior has unique characteristics only known and understood by those who have experienced it themselves. For this reason, you should find others who have firsthand experience with sex addiction as only they can truly understand the ins and outs of this particular disease. The best place to locate such individuals is in the rooms of SLAA, as these are people who acknowledge they have a problem with sexual behaviors and are committed to making necessary changes in their lives.

Another compelling reason you should attend SLAA meetings in addition to your AA or NA meetings is your level of comfortability discussing sensitive topics in these group settings. Just as there are aspects of our lives in active substance abuse we are hesitant to discuss among those who lack firsthand experience with drug addiciton, so too will there be topics regarding your sex addiction you may not feel comfortable sharing with your AA or NA groups. While you should always strive to maintain rigorous honesty in the rooms of 12-step recovery, it is completely understandable you may hold back certain details in the context of AA or NA. SLAA offers a safe space and group of understanding individuals to whom you can feel comfortable discussing any sensitive details surrounding your sex addiction.

Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous meetings are rooted in the same 12-step recovery program of Alcoholics Anonymous, tailored to the specifics of the disease of sex addiction. These meetings can provide you a community of support as you attempt to change your unhealthily behaviors and ideas surrounding sex, as well as a safe place for you to practice rigorous honesty when sharing about your sex addiction. You may think that working a program of AA or NA is enough to treat all your addictive behaviors, and while the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous address the underlying mental and emotional issues which led to all your addictions, it is still beneficial to include SLAA meetings in your routine in order to build a support network of people who understand exactly what you are going through in recovering from sex addiction.
