In these uncertain times, it is easy to fall into a mindset of hopelessness and depression. Many of us are facing hardships, whether it be the loss of a loved one due to COVID or an extended period of unemployment due to restrictions resulting from the pandemic. While it may feel like life is conspiring against you and attempting to get sober would do no good, this could not be further from the truth. Sobriety will give you the ability to handle life on life’s terms, along with a mindset of acceptance which will give you comfort and solace in times of strife.
In active addiction, every day we wage a war on reality, doing our best to deflect and repress any consequences or negative emotions we encounter. When we experience the loss of a loved one while actively abusing substances, we lean into our addictions even harder in order to minimize the pain felt as a result of this loss. This method of numbing our feelings does us a great disservice, as you are unable to process your grief and move on from the loss of a loved one if you do not “feel your feelings” and process them properly. Therefore, you remain stuck on the loss of your loved one, unable to move forward emotionally in your life.
As for any employment issues you are experiencing as a result of the pandemic, a substance abuse problem is definitely not doing you any favors as you hunt for a job! Drugs and alcohol make us comfortable with our circumstances, robbing us of any initiative to improve our situation or take any sort of positive action to change our lives. This translates to our becoming comfortable with unemployment, even if it means cutting corners and even breaking the law in order to continue to support our habit. This is a horrible mindset with which to enter a new year, and clearly kneecaps any modest effort you may be making towards securing employment.
The past year has left us all feeling a bit out of sorts, and for those in active addiciton you may be questioning whether attempting sobriety is a worthwhile endeavor. Your perspective and mindset have been warped by your drug of choice, but hopefully you will be blessed with a moment of clarity in which you realize all the problems in your life are only magnified by your substance abuse. Sobriety is the first step towards tackling the challenges in your life and overcoming them, so start the new year off on the right foot by getting sober so you are ready to conquer 2021!
