Evolutions Rehab Center – Top Comprehensive Treatment for Dual Diagnosis in Florida

Our compassionate and specialized care, along with the love and dedication we have for what we do, guides us in treating the mind and the body. According to SAMHSA's 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, more than 21 million adults in the U.S. experience co-occurring disorders. These intertwined challenges demand a sophisticated, integrated approach. An approach that Evolutions provides through medically supported, exclusively individualized care in a safe and welcoming environment.

Our dual diagnosis treatment programs include a full continuum of care that can treat the whole person, not just their symptoms. Whether you’re coping with depression and alcohol use, anxiety and opioid dependence, or PTSD alongside stimulant use, we are well aware that these conditions don’t exist in isolation, and neither should your treatment.

Our dedicated, experienced, and well-educated medical team - including our Medical Director and board-certified psychiatrists - provides active oversight for all treatment programs and medication protocols. This leadership guarantees that every treatment plan is characterized by clinical precision and human empathy.

What Is Dual Diagnosis?

The coexistence of both a mental health disorder and a substance use disorder (SUD) is referred to as co-occurring disorders. Co-occurring disorders may include any combination of two or more SUDs and mental disorders identified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5-TR). Importantly, no specific combinations of mental and substance use disorders are uniquely defined as co-occurring disorders.

It’s not always clear which condition came first. However, regardless of origin, it’s essential to recognize that these conditions often feed off one another and mask each other’s symptoms, making proper diagnosis and care more critical and urgent.

What makes dual diagnosis complex is that the interactions between the two illnesses or disorders can worsen the progression of the other, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that one causes the onset of the other. That’s why our approach targets both simultaneously. Evolutions treats the brain, body, and behavior to help patients achieve clarity, emotional stability, and lasting recovery.

How Do I Know if I Need Dual Diagnosis Treatment?

At Evolutions Treatment Center, our experienced medical team provides services to help individuals recover from addiction and related mental health conditions. Before beginning a treatment for dual diagnosis, we first evaluate whether this approach is the most suitable for each individual. Upon arrival, clients receive a detailed initial psychiatric evaluation, with additional follow-up assessments scheduled as needed.

What sets us apart in dual diagnosis rehabilitation is how deeply our psychiatrists are involved in the process of the treatment. Rather than simply managing medications, our psychiatrists remain engaged at every stage of care. The collaborative relationship between our psychiatrists and clinical staff forms the foundation of successful patient outcomes. This teamwork makes it possible for us to identify any underlying mental health conditions that need our attention and develop individual treatment programs for each person's specific needs.

If you've ever thought, "I feel okay only when I’m using," or "nothing else seems to work," dual diagnosis treatment could be the piece you’re missing.

Common Dual Diagnosis Disorders

Though not a comprehensive list of all mental health conditions, certain types of disorders are frequently diagnosed in dual diagnosis treatment. Co-occurring mental health disorders may include, but are not limited to:
  • Anxiety disorders (GAD)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Bipolar I and II disorders
  • Depressive disorders
  • Schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorders
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Borderline personality disorder
  • Avoidant and dependent personality disorders
  • Social anxiety and phobias
  • Eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia
These mental health conditions often co-occur with substance misuse involving alcohol, opioids, prescription benzodiazepines (like Xanax or Klonopin), stimulants, marijuana, hallucinogens, and synthetic drugs.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment Plans

Our dual diagnosis treatment plans begin with a full psychiatric and medical assessment. We take the time to understand the dynamic relationship between substance use and mental health conditions, then build a care plan specific to your clinical presentation.

Clients may start with medically supervised detox if necessary, followed by Residential Treatment, Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), or Outpatient Program(OP) - all depend on the stability and goals each patient has.

PHP offers five or more hours of structured therapy per day, seven days a week; IOP provides three to five days of care per week for three hours a day; OP offers one to nine hours of care weekly as part of long-term recovery support.

Our team is licensed and trained and includes board-certified psychiatrists with over 15 years of experience in co-occurring disorders, as well as trauma specialists, licensed therapists, and recovery coaches. This deep expertise is to inform and support every stage of your healing journey, aftercare included. The main focus of our inpatient clinical team is to stabilize acute symptoms and provide intensive 24/7 support, while our outpatient clinical team supports transition and reintegration with structured, therapeutic flexibility. Throughout this period, our medical professionals will do their best to make sure your care is safe and adjusted to the challenges you encounter.

Question *

What is a dual diagnosis treatment center?
A dual diagnosis treatment facility like Evolutions specializes in treating co-occurring disorders, where a mental health issue and a substance use disorder exist simultaneously. The goal is to stabilize both conditions together, not in isolation.
Do you accept health insurance?
Yes. We work with most major insurance providers and offer free insurance verification before admission. Our admissions team will help you understand how coverage works and explain your payment options.
How common is dual diagnosis?
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, at least 38% of those who experience substance dependence also have a diagnosed mental illness, and about 18% of people with mental illness will develop a disorder with illicit or legal substances. In addition, about 60% of teens receiving treatment for substance abuse also have a mental illness. Sadly, more than 52% of individuals with co-occurring conditions never receive the care they need. More than half of those with co-occurring disorders who did not receive mental health care cited the cost as the main barrier to treatment, while 38.4% of those with co-occurring substance abuse cited an unwillingness to stop using as the biggest reason for not receiving treatment.
How does dual diagnosis treatment make a difference?
Treating addiction and an underlying mental health issue can be complex because the relationship between the two issues may not be fully understood. At the core of the dual diagnosis approach is that an addiction is inherently tied to other mental health issues. They can’t help but affect each other. Therefore, co-occurring mental illnesses are best treated simultaneously to ensure that progress on one does not interfere with treatment of the other
Can a loved one join me in my recovery journey?
Of course. We encourage family participation. Besides, holistic treatment involves rebuilding trust with our people. We create a family atmosphere by incorporating family therapy and visiting family members in the healing process.
What are the benefits of dual diagnosis disorder treatment?
Integrated treatment for a dual-diagnosis mental illness and drug use disorder is found to be more effective in comparison to performing separate treatment for each diagnosis. Professional dual diagnosis treatment can improve quality of life, increase the chances of recovery for both disorders, reduce and/or discontinue substance use, decrease hospitalizations, minimize medication interactions, alleviate psychiatric symptoms, result in fewer arrests, and enhance housing stability.
